The Sicamous Lookout is not much of a hike, but a drive on a logging road. It is a wooden platform hundreds of feet above the valley floor. Last time I was here, the logging road was pretty well maintained. This is a paraglides paradise, and precisely why there is an actual platform built here.
The lookout over looks Sicamous, which is nestled on the shores of Mara and Shuswap Lake. It's a small town, surrounded by fields, mountains and lakes. This is definite pit stop if you are in the area.
We arrived here to catch a sunrise, we didn't stay for the whole time as it was pretty windy up there, so depending on what time of year dress accordingly. You might want to check the road conditions as well. I imagine going up this in the winter would be sketchy. We went in July and it was the perfect time to go, no bugs or anything! The logging road could be achieved in the summer for sure by just a regular car.
DIRECTIONS:
Sicamous Lookout is located on the mountain directly behind Sicamous on a active logging road. The lookout is roughly 11 kilometres from the Trans-Canada Highway. This is a popular area for locals, when we were there we got lucky and caught a couple just leaving. So you might be lucky like us or you might not. Like I mentioned above the logging road is pretty well maintained but there are some potholes. If you meet any truckers, they have the right away, so please be mindful of that as well as Leave No Trace. Below is the map here you will want to follow, click the map to see it on Google Maps.
Within a few minutes of driving, you'll gain hundreds of elevation and get a glimpse of the valley below through the trees. You will have cell service the entire time so no need to worry about that. It's pretty easy to find it, I have never heard of this lookout until I was searching for things to do or trails to find. You will most likely be driving anywhere from 15-20 minutes, just an FYI the ramp is below the road and can be easily missed.
Keep your eyes peeled to the left (or have Google Maps open) and you'll spot the lookout. If I can remember the road gets pretty narrow, so there isn't a lot of parking. Park just before or after a few metres. It's a road side gem, you might have to walk a whole whopping 7 steps or something to get on the platform. Please use extreme caution when taking photos off the edge, one slip and your life is over. Be smart.
Grab a picnic, enjoy the views and have fun. I know you'll have an amazing time here. It is absolutely gorgeous up there and will forever be one of my favourites. Happy hunting, the world is a big place - get out there.
